A Digital Health Application (DiGA) is a certified medical device that can be prescribed by your doctor or therapist for specific conditions, such as depressive moods or anxiety disorders. Today, these prescriptions are frequently issued as e-prescriptions.

However, unlike classic medications, you don't receive a physical product directly at the pharmacy. Instead, you first get an activation code from your health insurance provider. Only with this code can you activate and start using your DiGA.

Because of this, redeeming an e-prescription for a DiGA works slightly differently than the familiar process for prescription drugs.

Talk to your attending doctor or therapist about the DiGA you would like to use. If your symptoms meet the requirements, you will receive a prescription, either as a traditional paper prescription or as a DiGA e-prescription.

If your DiGA is issued as an e-prescription, it is best to ask for a paper printout right away. This printout is often referred to as:

• Printout for redeeming a DiGA

With this printout, you can easily proceed with your DiGA prescription. If you have already left the doctor's office, simply give them a call—the team can easily issue the document for you retroactively.

There are several ways to do this:

Option 1: Use the manufacturer's prescription service

Many DiGA manufacturers, such as deprexis, offer a free prescription service. You simply upload a photo of your paper printout or prescription. The provider then handles the submission to your public health insurance company and requests the activation code for you. This often saves time and effort.

Option 2: Submit directly to your health insurance provider

Alternatively, you can submit your e-prescription to your health insurer yourself. To do this, you usually need your Health ID to log into your health insurance provider's service app. Once logged in, you will typically find a section on the home page called "E-Rezepte" (E-Prescriptions) or "ePA" (Electronic Patient Record). Select your e-prescription there and click "Redeem" or "Transmit to health insurer".

Option 3: Via the gematik E-Rezept app

Many health insurance providers now also support submission via the gematik E-Rezept app. There, you can manage your DiGA e-prescription digitally and forward it to your insurer. To use the gematik app, you need to complete a one-time registration process. Since this registration is a bit more complex, you can find a detailed guide on the gematik website.

After your health insurance provider has verified the prescription, you will receive your personal DiGA code or activation code. Depending on the health insurer, this code is sent by post, email, or digitally within the customer portal of the health insurance app.

Now you can redeem your DiGA code. To do this:

1. Open the website of your DiGA
2. Enter your activation code there
3. Create your user account
4. Confirm your email address
5. Start your digital therapy right away
